The Growing Popularity of India as a Medical Tourism Destination

According to a recent article, India is becoming a first-class destination for medical tourism. The Indian government is setting up the country’s Medical Tourism and Wellness policies to encourage people from all over the world to seek out healthcare in India.

The first policy entails hospitals and medical facilities registering with the Ministry of Health and listing their prices for both healthcare procedures and packages (and what the packages include). The goal is to encourage hospitals to offer procedures at competitive prices with the intent of drawing more international patients to the country and boosting tourism revenue. Already, we are seeing that this is leading to quality care found in India starting at a tenth of the price compared to the same procedures in the US.

How SkyMedicus Helps with Medical Tourism Logistics

Here at SkyMedicus, we have the honor and privilege of helping people across the U.S. take advantage of medical tourism, and ultimately get the quality treatment and care they need at a price that makes sense – rather than sends them spiraling into debt. Indeed, as Investopedia chillingly points out:

"When it comes to serious debt, medical expenses are often the culprit for putting many people deep in the red. A survey by the Commonwealth Fund found that one out of five adults is paying off debt from medical bills. Making matters worse, higher medical expenses and reduced insurance coverage have forced families to dip into household savings or take on additional credit card debt."

And CNBC.com reports that medical debt is now the number one cause of bankruptcies in the country, with 56 million adults struggling to cover healthcare related bills.

How SkyMedicus Can Customize Your Medical Tourism Trip

As revealed by noted U.S. journalist Sasha Issenberg in his recently-published book Outpatients: The Astonishing New World of Medical Tourism, contrary to what some people believe, the overwhelming majority of people who seek treatment abroad aren’t high-flying wealthy elites getting elective surgeries like tummy tucks and nose jobs. Rather, the demand is driven by everyday, middle-class people who simply want quality healthcare at much lower cost.

And “much lower” doesn’t mean a few hundred or even a few thousand dollars. Even after all expenses are calculated – including airfare, hotel, ground transportation, and everything else – it’s not uncommon for patients to save tens of thousands of dollars.

Why Employers are Paying for High Quality Medical Tourism

As reported by Fortune Magazine, healthcare costs are projected to rise 6.5 percent over the next year -- which is higher than the rate of inflation. It’s a worrisome trend that has prompted the principal of PwC’s Global Human Resource Services group to warn: “The bad news is health care does cost employers a lot of money, and the idea that they are just going to absorb a 6.5% increase when CPI is at a much lower rate is unlikely, so they will continue to cost shift.”

Yet, the news isn’t all bad. That’s because instead of shifting the rising cost burden to their employees, some progressive employers are opting to pay for high quality medical tourism – which is a win for them, and even bigger victory for their employees.

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Wait for Hip Replacement Surgery

If you’re hesitant to move forward with the hip replacement surgery that your doctor advises, then be assured that you aren’t alone. As noted by Dr. Ian Clark, a medical researcher and founder of Peterson Tribology Laboratory for joint replacement at California’s Loma Linda University, many people delay their much-needed hip replacement surgery because:

  • They’re afraid of the “unknown”
  • They’re afraid of surgery in general
  • They’re afraid of “losing” a part of their body
  • They’re afraid of post-operative pain

However, while all of these fears are understandable – after all, any kind of surgery is cause for serious consideration and contemplation – there is another fear that must be added to the list: fear of falling deep into debt or putting oneself at risk of declaring medical bill-related bankruptcy.
