Q: WHAT IS MEDICAL TOURISM?
A: Medical tourism can be outbound (traveling to a country outside the U.S.), inbound (traveling to the U.S. from an international destination), or intrabound (traveling within the U.S. to a different geographic area).
Q: WHY ARE PATIENTS TRAVELING FOR MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE?
A: Patients are traveling because of the high quality of global healthcare, affordability, and access to or better availability of care. The primary reason for medical tourism is that the procedure is cost prohibitive or is not offered in the patient’s local area.
Q: WHAT ARE THE COST SAVINGS?
A: The cost savings can range from 25% up to 90%. SkyMedicus offer FREE search and cost comparison on this site.
Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SIGN UP WITH SKYMEDICUS?
A: Nothing. You will never be charged to sign up and search through the SM portal. You are only charged a 10% payment towards the price of your quoted procedure when you decide you are ready to book. Prior to booking, you will receive a personalized quote detailing the cost of the procedure, and all associated costs. At no point will any charges be a surprise, no secret add-ons will appear—ever --you can trust that our quote includes everything.
Q: CAN I CONSULT WITH A SKYMEDICUS PROVIDER BEFORE I MAKE MY DECISION?
A: Absolutely. Once you have joined SkyMedicus, you will have total access to our HIPAA compliant dashboard, where you can start a conversation with multiple doctors to ask them questions, get quotes and upload medical or dental records, x rays or exams for pre-approval.
Q: HOW WILL I CORRESPOND WITH MY PHYSICIAN PRIOR TO DEPARTURE?
After you have made your decision, you will have direct communication with your physician through our system.
Q: WILL THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL I DEAL WITH BE ABLE TO SPEAK ENGLISH?
A: Yes. In order to join the SkyMedicus Network, we require that our providers speak fluent English and have English-speaking staff. They will be at your disposal during your trip. This will include hospital staff, doctors, hotel personnel, etc.
Q: WHAT DOCUMENTS WILL I NEED TO TRAVEL ABROAD?
A: You will need a valid passport to enter your chosen country and re-enter the United States. Some countries require a visa to enter their country. There are agencies that work with special passport and visa agencies to expedite the necessary documents in as little as 24-72 hours depending on your travel destination. To determine the passport or visa requirements for your area, please check with the Consulate for that Country in your area or your SkyMedicus concierge will be happy to assist you.
Q: DO YOU ACCEPT MEDICAL INSURANCE?
A: Each provider and insurance policy is different. You can find out if your insurance will cover any or all of your procedure by going to the forms section in your Patient Profile and filling out the insurance form. You can then submit it to your chosen provider so they can check with your insurance company to see what will be covered. You can also contact your insurance company directly and ask them what their policy is for that location and check to see if it is in their network. If that particular provider is not in their network, ask about their out of network provider reimbursement.
Q: WILL YOU HELP ME CHOOSE A PROVIDER?
A: SkyMedicus is not a medical referral service or a healthcare service provider, so we cannot endorse or personally recommend any specific healthcare provider listed in our network. That said, every provider listed has been vetted through a rigorous process and is not allowed to join the SkyMedicus Provider Network until they meet every requirement. By providing names, contact information and credentials about medical leaders abroad, SkyMedicus ensures you have all the information needed to make informed decisions about your health.
Q: ARE THE PROVIDERS BOARD CERTIFIED?
A: While each country has their own specific certification and educational requirements, which are very comparable to the US, we guarantee that our providers are up to date on all required certifications and educational standards. SkyMedicus requires these certifications to be viewable to the public and available to show upon request. Board certification is not required even in the USA, so if you have questions on what this is or how to know how a doctor is licensed, please ask your SkyMedicus concierge.
Q: WHAT ABOUT POST SURGERY FOLLOW UP?
A: Following your chosen procedure, our providers take extra care to ensure you are recovering well. When you are 100% ready to travel, they will help you with all needs required for your flight back home. Upon receiving your quote from your chosen provider, he/she will provide all details in average recovery time and where this will take place – hospital, clinic, hotel, etc. If additional checkups/check ins are required once you are back home, your chosen provider will let you know at the time of discharge. When and how frequently these follow-ups occur varies greatly depending on your specific case. However, we guarantee that all post procedure follow up is explained clearly, in both verbal and written form. We encourage you to keep your primary care physician and/or specialist up to date on all of your medical tourism activities. We will assist you by answering any questions that you or your doctor may have and help you locate a local provider for follow up care, if needed.
Q: WHAT IF THERE ARE COMPLICATIONS?
A: Understandably, no matter where you receive care, there are possibilities of complications. That said, any complications that may arise are covered with the travel insurance offered for an additional fee with any package. Please note that in our rigorous screening process, we have vetted the emergency services available – in most cases, these ER services are better equipped, cleaner and faster to respond than that in the US.
Q: WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
A: Honest and open communication is very important to us, so we would never claim that there are no risks when undergoing any medical or dental procedure. What we can say is that by working with only the highest quality institutions and doctors, we strive to ensure that the level of risk is no greater (and often less risky) than if you were treated in your local area. It is still important for you to do your own research based on the options presented to you so that you can make an informed final decision. We also require that all patients and health care providers agree to arbitration through SkyMedicus so that we can advocate for the best outcome on your behalf. Typically if you choose to go to a provider alone, you have less negotiation power than SkyMedicus has sending them hundreds of patients a month.
Q: HOW DO I CANCEL OR RESCHEDULE A PROCEDURE?
A: If it is necessary to cancel or reschedule a procedure, please send us an email via the contact form and select the "Procedure Cancellation or Reschedule Department". We will work with you and your Healthcare Provider to adjust or cancel your appointment. If you cancel your procedure, your SkyMedicus Credits will be credited back to your account and you may use them to schedule another procedure with any other provider in our network.
