How to Check if Your Insurance Covers Weight Loss Surgery Abroad

With apologies to insurance underwriters, adjusters, agents and professionals everywhere: many people who have attempted to file a seemingly simple, straightforward health insurance claim have discovered that the landscape can be extremely complex – and in some cases, outright nonsensical.

And if you shift the scenario to weight loss surgery abroad – which is for most insurance carriers a relatively new addition to their coverage books; if they offer it at all, that is – then the chances of things being more complex than clear increase dramatically.

The goods news (phew!) is that you don’t have to jump through hoops or climb uphill to find out if your insurance company covers weight loss surgery abroad.

Below, we highlight the 3 steps you can take to make the process simple and manageable:

How to See if Weight Loss Surgery Abroad is Covered By Insurance

1. Check your policy.

The best place to start is by reviewing your policy. Despite all of the “notwithstanding” and “party of the first part” jargon, you should be able to decipher whether your insurance company covers medical tourism (note: this may be called something else in your policy).

2. Call your insurance broker or agent.

Depending on your type of coverage, you can either call your broker or an agent to get more facts. As you can see, we recommend that you check your policy before calling for additional information. This will help you ask specific questions and, if necessary, point your broker/agent to a clause in your coverage for an explanation.

3. Get all of the details in writing.

We cannot stress this enough: if your coverage will indeed pay for some or all of your weight loss surgery abroad, then have your insurance company put everything in writing. This includes the amount of coverage, the forms that you need to submit (and by when), and so on. You want to dot all of the i’s and cross all of the t’s here, because the last thing you want to deal with during your recovery is confusion regarding your claim.

What if Your Insurance Won’t Cover Weight Loss Surgery Abroad?

It’s also possible that your insurance won’t cover the cost of your weight loss surgery abroad, or that you’ll be told that you must co-pay an excessive -- and possibly prohibitive – amount out-of-pocket.

If this is the case, then you still have options. Start by speaking with your doctor, who may agree to advocate for you, or work with you on a post-recovery payment plan that helps cushion the financial blow.

Or, if your employer offers a Health Savings Account, you may be able to use this cash to cover your costs. While it’s not the same as having insurance take care of the whole bill, your costs will be offset by any employer contributions to the plan. Plus, HSA dollars are pre-tax, which essentially makes each $1 you spend worth more (depending on your income tax bracket).
