5 Ways to Optimize Your Medical Tourism Trip

As reported by Patients Beyond Borders, an estimated 1.2 million Americans head abroad to reap the benefits of medical tourism, which include dramatic cost savings, no waiting periods, and for many travelers, the chance to combine their medical experience with a pleasant getaway as well.
Indeed, this latter advantage is particularly welcome this time of year for people who live in the Midwest and Northeast, as Old Man Winter or Mother Nature (take your pick!) has decided that “cold with a chance of snow” is basically the default weather forecast until at least mid-March; though possibly into April.
As such, if you’re considering joining the millions of Americans headed to Mexico, Costa Rica, India, Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan or several other popular (not to mention, warm and sunny!) medical tourism destinations, then below we highlight 5 ways you can optimize your experience:
Well ahead of your trip and even before booking, contact prospective surgeons abroad to learn about their areas of specialization, experience, history, approach, and other aspects that will help you determine if they are an optimal fit. You want to ultimately choose a surgeon who is competent and experienced, and with whom you feel comfortable and safe.
As part of the same due diligence process noted above, you also want to research potential hospitals or healthcare facilities, to ensure that they are reputable, and meet acceptable standards for quality and care.
The logistics of medical tourism are somewhat different than those during a typical vacation, because adhering to itineraries and ensuring that you have a stress-free experience is more than just a preference: it is part of your overall care plan.
To that end, it is very important that you identify and address all of the logistical details, including (but not limited to) who will be picking you up from the airport, where you will be staying (hotel, hospital, both), how you will get around, and so on. Included in your plan should be how you’ll take care of payments, and providing information to any companions on rules regarding visitation.
While you may not (and hopefully will not) need to take advantage of 24/7 nursing care while away from home, it is nevertheless important that this is an option for you in case you need it. Obviously if you are staying in a hospital this will be provided to you. However, if you are staying in a hotel – which many people prefer to do as soon as they are discharged, since they find it more comfortable – then you want to be able to pick up the phone and get the responsive help you need; even if it just an answer to a question regarding medication, or other non-emergency inquiry.
Last but certainly not least, you want to proactively inform your local physician of your intention to take advantage of medical tourism, and involve her or him in the process. For example, you will want your physician to communicate with your surgeon abroad, so they can share information and coordinate care.
Following the advice laid out above will go a long way towards optimizing your medical tourism experience, and helping you have a positive, safe and successful surgery or treatment.
However, you may still find that handling all of the details and issues on your own can be time consuming, confusing and overwhelming – especially since you have likely never experienced medical tourism before. If so, then we warmly invite you to contact the SkyMedicus team today.
