What to Expect on the Road to Recovery After Weight Loss Surgery Abroad

If you’re considering having weight loss surgery abroad -- or have already decided that it’s the right choice for your physical, emotional and psychological health and wellness -- then chances are you’re not just thinking about flights, hotels and currency exchange: you’re dreaming of how much better your life will be after your treatment and when you’re back home!

While every patient experience is unique – because every surgery is unique – generally speaking, here’s what you can expect on the road to recovery after weight loss surgery abroad:

  • You’ll likely stay in the hospital for 1-3 days after your weight loss surgery. Depending on your specific needs, you may be able to spend some of this time (as well as additional days if you wish) at a 4 or 5-star hotel. Many patients find this more comfortable, since they can enjoy extra amenities like king size beds, big screen HDTV, wifi, and so on.
  • During your post-op recovery, you’ll work with a physical therapist to learn how to move around safely and as comfortably as possible. You’ll also be monitored closely by a specialized bariatric nurse, and work with a dietician to learn about proper eating routines and choices.
  • Within a couple of weeks, provided that there are no issues, your surgeon will give you the “all clear” to return home. However, like many patients you may want to extend your stay a bit longer, so that you can enjoy a few extra days in a pleasant destination.
  • Once you return home, you’ll schedule an appointment with your physician, who will coordinate your recovery with your surgeon abroad. This includes sharing medical charts, prescription medication, etc. Naturally, all of this information will be transmitted securely and governed by HIPAA privacy regulations.
  • You may also wish to attend support group sessions, which will allow you to connect with others who have had weight loss surgery (there are different types), as well as dieticians, PTs, and other healthcare experts. These support groups are usually free or offered at a nominal charge. If support group sessions aren’t available where you live (or aren’t convenient), there are numerous online options as well that you can “virtually attend” anytime.
