Need Dental Implants? 3 Reasons Why Dental Tourism is the Solution

Posted by skymedicus STAFF on 7/26/2017 1:28 PM | Last Modified: September 26, 2017

As reported by The New York Times, a growing number of Americans are saying goodbye to dentures, and hello to dental implants – and with good reason!

Compared to dentures, dental implants are stronger, more durable, more comfortable, and can be shaped and polished to look indistinguishable from natural teeth. In fact, dental implants are so well-built that they’re actually stronger than natural teeth – which means that, unlike denture wearers, people don’t have to live in fear of eating nuts or chomping down on an olive pit, and having to make a frantic call to their dentist.

That’s the good news. The bad news, however, is that dental implants in the U.S. aren’t cheap. As reported by TIME, costs typically range from $3,000 to $4,500 per implant. However, patients who need a bone graft of other pre-implant treatment will pay significantly more.

And the bad news doesn’t end there. Many people who need a dental implant (or more than one) are shocked to learn that their standard health insurance won’t cover the bill. This is because it’s not considered a medical treatment – it’s considered a dental treatment.

To put this in other words: people who lose a tooth because they were in a car accident or were hit in the face by a 80mph fastball will probably have their implant covered. But people who lose a tooth due to an oral health issue (tooth decay, etc.) won’t be covered.

Unfortunately, this latter group comprises the majority of folks who need a dental implant. And considering that more than 100 million Americans don’t have dental insurance (source:, it’s not a financially feasible option UNLESS they broaden their horizons, and do what millions of people around the world have been doing for decades: take advantage of dental tourism!

Here are the 3 key reasons why dental tourism is the solution for people who need dental implants, but aren’t covered by insurance:

1. Major Cost Savings

As expected, the biggest reason that dental tourism is skyrocketing in popularity is the cost savings. For example, a dental implant in Mexico, Costa Rica, Hungary, Romania, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, India and many other countries typically costs well under $1,000. In some countries, it can even be less than $500.

2. Excellent Quality

The reason that dental care costs so much in the U.S. is not because the quality is inherently superior. It’s because overhead costs are excessive, and dentists do what every other business owner does in such cases: pass as much of the cost as possible on to consumers. Of course, for-profit insurance companies are also part of the problem. They have zero incentive to keep costs low, and every reason to make them as high as possible.

However, the costs of living (and hence costs of running a dental practice) are typically lower abroad than in the U.S. Plus, the government typically plays a role in setting prices and keeping them affordable. The bottom-line is that people enjoy the same level of quality at home – or in some cases, even better quality – but at a much lower price.

3. Free Vacation!

Many dental tourists combine their dental implant treatment with a vacation, since the cost savings more than offset the flight and accommodation fees. Indeed, heading to exotic Thailand or lush Costa Rica is much more exciting than going downtown to a local dental clinic!
