Why Should You Travel Abroad for Your Dental Tourism Procedure?

Across the country, a growing number of people are heading abroad for a variety of dental tourism procedures. And contrary to popular belief, the majority of people heading to Mexico, Costa Rica, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore and many other popular destinations actually have insurance.

Indeed, as reported by the Huffington Post, a typical dental insurance plan doesn’t provide 100 percent coverage, or even 80 or 90 percent for anything other than routine cleanings and check-ups. For most other procedures – including crowns, veneers, root canals, cosmetic dental solutions, and so on – policyholders are usually required to pay 50 percent; or sometimes more. On top of this, most dental policies limit coverage to $1,500 a year.

And so, both uninsured and insured people are taking advantage of dental tourism to save anywhere from a few thousand, to tens of thousands of dollars. For instance, profiled the story of a man whose teeth needed to be raised, and he also required several crowns. By heading down to Los Algodones, Mexico, he saved a whopping $62,000.

However, while the dramatic cost savings are far and away the number one reason why people choose to travel abroad for dental tourism, it’s not the only factor. Other reasons include:

  • The opportunity to have multiple healthcare treatments completed during the same trip, such as having scans, tests, etc.
  • The chance to enjoy what basically amounts to a free vacation in a resort-like atmosphere.
  • The opportunity to access state-of-the-art technology.

This last point may seem surprising, since some people assume that dental and overall healthcare technology used in countries like Mexico are inferior to the U.S. However, this is often not the case. There are many small cities and rural areas in the U.S. where access to advanced technology is limited; or in some cases, unavailable (therefore obliging people to head to bigger cities or regional healthcare hubs).

However, a well-chosen dental clinic abroad will have the latest technology, since they cater to (and sometimes exclusively specialize) in serving patients from the U.S., Canada, the UK, and other countries where the costs of dental care are excessive, if not prohibitive.
