4 Benefits of Medical Tourism Besides How It Saves You Money

As you may already know from speaking with colleagues, neighbors, and perhaps even your doctor, medical tourism is growing in popularity each year. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 750,000 Americans each year head to the airport vs. their local hospital or dental clinic in order to get everything from bariatric surgery, to dental implants, to scans and tests, and the list goes on.

Obviously, the primary motivation for medical tourists is to save money – and not just a few dollars here and there, either. People are saving anywhere from 30-70 percent, which for procedures like hip replacement surgery or smile makeovers translates into tens or, in some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings.

However, while saving money is key, it’s by no means the only reason why medical tourism is growing in popularity each year. As reported by CNN, there are other motivations for heading abroad to Mexico, Costa Rica, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Belgium, Hungary, and so on. These benefits include:

  1. World-class care that rivals – and in many cases exceeds – the standards and outcomes of US-based hospitals. Indeed, many doctors, dentists and surgeons abroad were trained in the U.S.
  1. Efficient services that include minimal waiting times, and in many cases more appointment options (e.g. early or late day, weekends, etc.). Contrast this to the U.S., where waiting lists for some surgeries can be months, and hanging around in a waiting room for two hours because “the doctor is running a little behind today” is the norm, not the exception.
  1. Zero bureaucracy and policy headaches. Instead of having to sift through a list of in-network providers or worry about co-pay rules and regulations, patients who head abroad get a simple itemized bill. There’s no hassle or confusion, and everything (and everyone) is very patient-centric.
  1. The ability to enjoy what essentially amounts to a free trip! Indeed, many people can’t justify the cost of a vacation to Mexico, Costa Rica, Malaysia, and so on. However, medical tourism makes it possible, since the cost savings are so massive.
