Which Weight Loss Surgery Is Best for You?

Across the country, hundreds of thousands of people are poised to dramatically and permanently benefit from weight loss surgery. So what’s preventing them from moving ahead? It’s not lack of desire or support from their doctor. Rather, it’s something that has nothing to do with health at all: money

Indeed, as reported by The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, weight loss surgery in the US costs between $20,000 and $25,000 on average – and in many cases, the final price is significantly higher. For most Americans, this isn’t just excessive; it’s prohibitive.

Fortunately, there’s a proven and popular alternative that a growing number of people across the US – as well as other countries such as Canada, the UK, Australia, France, Germany, and the list goes on – are taking advantage of: having their weight loss surgery performed abroad, where costs can be 50 to 80 percent less.

If this is an option that you’re researching and exploring, then below we highlight some common weight loss surgery options; one of which (per your doctor and surgeon’s approval) may be right for you:

Lap Band Weight Loss Surgery

This procedure involves sewing a silicone band fitted with an inner balloon on the upper-part of the stomach, and then adding a saline solution to a balloon in order to fill out the abdominal muscles. As a result, the size of the stomach shrinks and therefore less food is eaten in order to feel full (i.e. satiated).

Lap band weight loss surgery is rapid, and typically takes about an hour. Patients may even be discharged from the hospital the same day, though some are required to stay overnight.

Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Surgery

This procedure – which is also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy or laparoscopic surgery – involves removing about 85 percent of the stomach, and connecting the small intestine to the esophagus via a long tube. As a result, much less food is needed to satisfy hunger, and weight loss can be maintained.

Gastric sleeve weight loss surgery can take between 1-2 hours, and a hospital stay of 2-3 days is typically required.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Weight Loss Surgery

This procedure is the most common type of weight loss surgery in the US. It involves using a stapling device in order to create a smaller stomach, which is then connected via a rearranged small intestine to the larger stomach (unlike gastric sleeve surgery, the larger stomach isn’t removed). Again, the purpose here is to shrink the stomach so that less food is needed.

Laparoscopic gastric bypass weight loss surgery typically takes between 1-2 hours, and generally speaking, people who choose this option return to pre-surgical levels of activity faster than other options.

Duodenal Switch Surgery

Duodenal switch surgery – which is also called biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch surgery or gastric reductionduodenal switch surgery -- involves removing about 70 percent of stomach, which results in a fat intake of only about 20 percent; ultimately leading to long-term weight management.

Duodenal switch surgery can take about 5-6 hours, and is more suitable for people who are excessively or morbidly obese. Those who aren’t are typically advised by their doctor and surgeon to choose another, less invasive option.
