Top Dental Tourism Statistics for Dental Procedures Abroad

Across the country, an increasing number of people are booking dental procedures abroad in order to save anywhere from a few thousand, to tens of thousands of dollars. Indeed, Patients Beyond Borders notes that “typical costs of dental procedures [abroad] are around 60% less than those found in industrialized nations. In some cases—such as restorative dentistry--the savings may be as high as 85%.”
What’s more, a typical dental insurance plan only covers 100 percent of the cost for routine cleanings and check-ups. For other treatments and procedures, the co-pay obligation is 50 percent or higher. And on top of this, most dental policies limit coverage to $1,500 a year. Considering that a single dental implant in the U.S. can cost around $5,000, it is easy to understand why both insured and uninsured people are taking advantage of dental treatment abroad.

With the above in mind, here are the top dental tourism statistics for dental procedures abroad:

  • According to PBS, more than 100 million Americans don’t go to the dentist because they cannot afford to.
  • As noted by Healthline.com, over 100 million American’s don’t have dental insurance, even after enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  • Health.com reports that an estimated 400,000 Americans take advantage of dental treatment abroad each year.
  • As reported by FOX News, the most popular destinations for dental tourists include Mexico, Costa Rica and India.
  • According to Tourism-Review.net, the top 6 dental procedures abroad are: dental crowns, dental implants, dental bridges, root canals, dental veneers, and total smile makeovers.
  • As noted by Patients Without Borders, the top reasons people travel abroad for dental treatment are to take care of: one-off and acute procedures; routine dental care; cosmetic dental procedures; restorative work; and emergency treatment.
