5 Questions to Ask a Medical Tourism Company BEFORE Booking Your Hip Replacement Surgery Abroad

It goes without saying that long before you even consider hip replacement surgery abroad, you’ll have a series of conversations with your doctor (and possibly other medical specialists as well), along with your family and peers. After all, while hip replacement surgery is quite common, it’s nevertheless a decision that must be made only after careful consideration of risks and other factors – regardless of where the surgery is performed.

However, there is another key conversation(s) that you must before deciding on medical tourism – this time, with a potential medical tourism company. To help you get the insights and information you need, here are 5 questions to ask:

1. Do you specialize in helping people take advantage of medical tourism?

You want to steer clear of any companies that “dabble” in the medical tourism field. As the old but wise saying goes: there’s no substitute for experience. Just as your surgeon must specialize in hip replacement surgery, the medical tourism company you choose must specialize in serving the needs of individuals like you.

2. Are you objective and unbiased?

You must be assured that the medical tourism partner you choose is 100 percent focused on helping YOU make informed decisions vs. steering you towards a certain surgeon or hospital. If you detect that the so-called advice you’re getting is biased or self-interested, then see this as a red flag and move on.

3. Do you handle some or all of the logistical details?

There are a myriad of logistical details that must be identified and addressed long before you head for the airport. Your medical tourism company must have the expertise and capacity to handle ALL of these details, so that you can focus on getting the care you need vs. worrying about things like airport transfers, ground transportation, exchanging currency to pay your bill, and so on.

4. What – if any – support do you provide while I’m abroad?

You may have questions or concerns while abroad; including some that may not directly relate to your surgery, but may nevertheless need to be addressed. For example, you may want to have a family member or caregiver fly over and join you, or you may want to extend your trip by a few days or even longer (which some people opt to do given how inexpensive it is). Regardless of the issue, your medical tourism company must be provide you with 24/7 concierge care.

5. Will you clearly identify the costs involved so that there are no surprises?

While there are many reasons for choosing hip replacement abroad vs. in the U.S. – such as avoiding long waiting lists – the primary consideration for most people is to save money. And this is by no means a small matter! Indeed, the New York Times profiled a Colorado resident who saved more than $50,000 by getting hip replacement surgery overseas vs. at home. Your medical tourism company should provide you with a clear, line-by-line quote that shows you exactly how much you’ll pay and for why, so that you can decide whether to move forward.

And if you decide to book your trip, your medical tourism company should also pay the bill on your behalf, so that you don’t have to deal with currency exchanges.
