Addressing Flying Concerns When Traveling Abroad For Surgery

Each year, a growing number of people across the country are discovering the benefits of traveling abroad for surgery, which include: dramatic cost savings (usually between 30 and 80 percent), no lengthy waiting list, and access to world-class quality surgeons and physicians - many of whom earned their MD in the U.S. and are widely respected throughout and beyond the global medical community.

However, some patients who are eager to take advantage of these benefits are concerned about the return flight and want to know whether they’ll need to make special arrangements or if it will be too uncomfortable.

Below, we highlight some tips and advice to address flying concerns when traveling abroad for surgery:

How to Alleviate Flying Concerns When Traveling Abroad for Surgery

1. Contact Your Airline

Each airline has regulations regarding flying after surgery (note, these regulations are for all patient-travelers, including those who are taking domestic flights). Contact your airline to see what steps you can take, or that the airline will need to take, to ensure that you have as safe flight that is as comfortable as possible.

For example, you may be given a seating assignment that offers more leg room, that is closer to the bathroom, or is closer to the on-board flight attendant station, and so on. Special meals may also be necessary (e.g. no sodium, etc.)

2. Speak With Your Doctors

Both of your doctors – your local GP or specialist, and your surgeon abroad – will provide you with advice related to flying concerns.

For example, they may provide you with a datasheet or other document that has tips related to your particular surgery or treatment, such as what you should avoid eating or drinking while in the air, what kind of clothing to wear/avoid wearing, and so on.
