What Is a Pre-Existing Condition?

Health care coverage may change soon with the type of coverage available and the cost of premiums being heavily influenced by pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing conditions are any health condition or conditions that have been diagnosed by a doctor before a health care plan goes into effect. Depending on the plan, a condition as small as a cold can be considered pre-existing, all the way up to cancer, diabetes, and other serious conditions.

For health insurers, a person with a pre-existing condition means that as soon as that person is accepted, the insurer must begin paying for the care that they need. In some cases prior to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), insurance companies could deny people with pre-existing conditions coverage. With the ACA, coverage is guaranteed, and insurance premiums are often unaffordable for individual policies. With employee group health plans, pre-existing conditions are not excluded if an employee with a pre-existing condition enrolls during the open enrollment period each year.

Here are some of the top pre-existing conditions that affect health care coverage:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Obesity
  • Heart disease
  • Infectious diseases
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Mental illness

The US Congress is currently debating changes to the ACA up to and including repeal and replacement. However, in these debates it appears that guaranteed coverage will be continued.

The SkyMedicus network includes health care providers who offer a variety of procedures to treat many of the above conditions at affordable cost with quality comparable to the care available in the US.
