"What Should I Ask My Doctor About Traveling for Medical Care?"

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises all people to see a doctor before traveling, so that they can get up-to-date on any required vaccinations, refill prescriptions as required, and get a “clean bill of health” before they head abroad.
However, people who plan on traveling for medical care – and not just for a vacation, to visit relatives, or for a business trip – aren’t just advised to check in with their doctor ahead of time: it’s an absolute must!
With this in mind, here are 3 key questions you should ask your doctor about traveling for medical care:
1. “Do you support my decision to travel for medical care?”
A growing number of doctors are supporting medical tourism as a viable option for their patients. This is because they realize that for most people and families, the cost of medical care in the U.S. is excessive or prohibitive – especially for procedures like hip replacement surgery, weight loss surgery, cosmetic surgery, and a wide range of dental treatments. You want your doctor to be on board with your decision, understand your motives and goals, and be behind you 100%.
2. “How can you help me have a safe medical tourism experience?”
Presuming that your doctor supports your decision to get medical care abroad, the next big question is: how will she or he help you have a safe medical tourism experience? Generally speaking, your doctor can (and ideally will) help in several ways, including: communicating with your doctor/surgeon abroad to coordinate your care, and providing you with all medical charts and records.
3. “How will you help me recover after I return home?”
Just like surgery or treatment in the U.S., after-care is a vital part of the process. As such, you want to ensure that you have a support system in place to assist your convalescence. Naturally, your doctor will play a key role, and you want to have a clear understanding of how she or he will help.
