China’s New Trend in Healthcare – Medical Tourism

The Chinese economy is growing at a steady pace and that has caused some cultural changes with the Chinese people. One of which being a growing trend to travel within and outside of China for healthcare. In 2015, almost half a million Chinese people traveled to receive healthcare. These travelers, whose destinations ranged from Hong Kong to Korea to the US to Switzerland, spent 6.3 billion on their healthcare and another 3.4 billion on expenses, like travel costs and hospitality. And these numbers are expected to continue growing.

The wealthiest in China are looking either for the best healthcare that money can buy, regardless of how far they must travel to find it, or for quality healthcare while on holiday. This takes them to the different cities in the US and UK.

Outbound medical tourism is not just for the wealthiest in China—the growing middle class, which is quickly approaching 50% of the population, has found that medical tourism is an attractive option for them, too, although they typically don’t travel as far. Much of China’s population live in the rural areas far outside of cities. Rural areas often lack hospitals with all specialties available like in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.

In the cities, healthcare is affordable, with many different modern medical facilities and hospitals with doctors and staff who available and offer a variety of procedures that are hard to find in the rest of the world, including stem cell therapies, alternative oncology, and traditional Chinese medicine. Outside the city, options are limited, which makes traveling for healthcare a viable option.

While some prevailing perception among Chinese billionaires is that healthcare in China is behind the rest of the world, large cities in China offer excellent healthcare for price conscious travelers. Options are wide and the doctors are very capable. Many of the medical facilities are modeled after Western hospitals. If you are considering medical tourism, China could be the right destination for you.
