Medical Tourism Facts: Top 6 Dental Procedures Performed Overseas

A growing number of Americans are choosing medical tourism in order to save thousands – or in many cases, tens of thousands – of dollars on dental care costs.

Indeed, as highlighted by the magazine International Living, a Colorado resident was told by several Denver-area dentists that the major dental work she needed would cost around $40,000. Instead of being forced to sell assets or plummet into debt, she opted for treatment in Costa Rica. Her final cost? A grand total of $14,400 including flight and accommodations!

What’s more, this good news story isn’t an outlier or the exception – it’s the norm. The website Patients Beyond Borders has noted that the “typical costs of dental procedures are around 60% less than those found in industrialized nations. In some cases—such as restorative dentistry--the savings may be as high as 85%.”

So, given that hundreds of thousands of Americans are choosing medical tourism and heading to places like Costa Rica, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea and the list goes on, what are these folks having done? As highlighted by, here are the top 6 dental procedures performed overseas:

  • Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are fixed prosthetic devices (i.e. they cannot be removed like dentures). They are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and used to restore the size and shape to chipped, misshapen and/or discolored teeth. In the U.S. a single dental crown can cost well over $1,000, while overseas it’s not uncommon to see costs of between $200 and $300, and sometimes even less.

  • Dental Implants

Dental implants are used to replace one or more missing teeth, and are increasingly being recommended by dentists as a better alternative to dentures. Dental implants are quite costly in the U.S., however, with prices ranging between $4,000 - $5,000 for a single implant. However, overseas in Thailand, Mexico and many other countries, the cost plummets to well under $1,000.

  • Dental Bridges

Like dental crowns, dental bridges are used to eliminate the gap between one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges can cost between $2,500 - $3,000 in the U.S., but are surprisingly affordable overseas, where prices of less than $300 are common.

  • Root Canals

A root canal involves replacing the infected pulp in a tooth’s root with an inert material. In the U.S., root canal on a single tooth can cost over $1,000, while overseas the price can be as low as $150 per tooth.

  • Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, customized shells that cover the front surface of a tooth in order to improve the shape, color, size, and/or length. A set of veneers can cost over $3,000 in the U.S., but well under $500 overseas.

  • Total Smile Makeover

A total smile makeover is a catch-all term to describe a combination of dental treatment and cosmetic work (e.g. whitening teeth, shaping teeth, fixing a “gummy smile” and so on). As you might expect, the costs of a total smile makeover can range from a few thousand to well over $100,000 – it ultimately depends on what a patient wants, needs and can afford. However, when comparing “apples to apples” the cost savings of getting work done overseas are substantial, and can be anywhere from 60-85 percent less. This more than offsets travel and accommodation costs, plus patients get a free vacation!
