Cleft Lip/Palate Repair

Category(s): Cosmetic Surgery

Cleft lip and cleft palate occur during embryonic development, when a grove forms in lip and the roof of the mouth. A child may be born with one or both deformities. Surgery to fix this defect can be done at any stage of life, but the optimal time is during the first year of life. Surgical requirements vary depending on the degree of the deformity.

To repair a cleft lip, the surgeon connects the two sides of the cleft lip and realigns the muscle. If the deformity is severe enough, the nose may need to be repaired as well. A cleft palate is repaired by closing the nasal lining, repairing the muscle, and closing the gap in the roof of the mouth.
