Cosmetic Surgery

Category(s): Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery (also known as aesthetic plastic surgery) is an elective procedure which reshapes existing structures of the body in order to improve appearance and self-esteem.

The five most common cosmetic procedures are breast augmentation, liposuction, nasal surgery, eyelid surgery and abdominoplasty.

Before you proceed with cosmetic surgery consider several factors including:

• Expectations: These procedures will improve your appearance, not make your body perfect. Candidates are best suited for cosmetic surgery if they are healthy individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations.

• Expense: Cosmetic surgery isn't covered by most healthcare plans. The costs vary depending upon the procedures and additional funds may need to be used for follow up care and corrective procedures.

• Risks: Being dissatisfied with the results after the procedure and surgical complications including excessive bleeding or infection at the surgical site are possibilities.

• Recovery: It can take days, weeks, or even months to fully recovery from the procedures. This includes physical recovery as well as adapting to how the changes can affect your personal and professional life.

• Psychological changes: Cosmetic surgery can improve self esteem but isn't likely to

relieve depression and other mental conditions.

After determining that you want to proceed with cosmetic surgery, the next step should be to find a surgeon and schedule a consultation. Have a list of topics ready including questions about the surgeon and procedure(s), and resulting desires/expectations. Working closely with your surgeon throughout the process will improve the chance of satisfaction with the results of your procedure(s).
