Conventional Surgery (filtering microsurgery)

Category(s): Ophthalmology

This surgery is called a trabeculectomy or a sclerostomy. The procedure involves creating a tiny drainage hole in the sclera (the white part of the eye) with a small surgical tool. The new drainage hole allows fluid to flow out of the eye and helps lower eye pressure. This outpatient procedure is usually done with a local anesthetic and medications to induce a sedative effect.
